CVS Extra Care Deals and Walgreen's Register Rewards Beginning March 1--Monthly Flyers Are Out Too!

Welcome to a new month of savings! Sounds corny, I know, but hey you gotta get excited about something-it's a gray rainy day here.

There's quite a bit of potential here and I'm going to cover the deals I am most likely to do and a few others as well. If you haven't done so already, I'm challenging you to change your thinking. As you look at these deals, don't say "I've got enough of that stuff" or "I don't need that."

Instead think "hey, if I can get that for next to nuthin', I can give it to [insert charity name here]!" Or, if that is a big hill to climb mentally, think, gee, I wonder if [insert friend's name here] could use some of that?"

Can you do that? In the words of Mr. Rogers--"I knew you could." Now, let's get going. If I put together some good coupon snowballs, I'll update this post later today or tomorrow. However, I think I'm going to see the Terra Cotta Soldiers later, so that will be a little unpredictable

Shopping Roundup and the Publix Mystery Coupon for 2/22-2/23

The Publix Mystery Coupon is Publix Brand Tortilla Chips. They will be complemented nicely with the Athenos Hummus that is also on sale 2/$4.00

Now, the roundup.

I went to CVS and the only real deal I did was the Revlon one where you get $10 in ECBs with $20 of stuff. My wife needed nail files, so now she's got enough to escape prison, in the very unlikely event that should ever be necessary for her or, more likely, a distant relative or two.

At Walgreens, I just bought the aluminum foil. I did not have to break up the order. I bought six and only needed one coupons for the entire discount, despite the fact the coupon said limit 2. I guess they saw this one coming. FYI-to fill in the overage, I bought a Hershey's almond bar, which will be a reward for one of the children, should they do something courteous without us asking. That candy bar's going to be there for a while.

At Publix, I did very well. I give these numbers to document the savings from the two web sites I advocate without prompting; e-mealz and The Grocery Game.

Budget: $180

Before Savings Spending: $195.32
Savings from Coupons: $45.23 (thanks to the Grocery Game)
Savings from Sale: $48.28 (thanks to e-mealz)

Final Bill: $101.81

Look for Twitter Tweets in the next few days if I see anything good. Otherwise, my next post is on Wednesday. Until then, have fun, save money and come back and see me!

Kroger is having another 10/$10 sale. Some of the items have coupons that should make the items either free or close to it. Those items are in green. CVS Extra Care Deals and Walgreens Register Rewards Deals beginning February 22

Before I go into these deals, I want to give a tip: set a budget each week for how much you’re willing to spend BEFORE rebates. And do all your purchases with cash.

This month’s Walgreens deals are a good example why. This month, there is a bunch of rebate items in the Easy Saver catalog and some of them are free after rebate.

So what’s the big deal? I’ve found when doing these deals—especially at Walgreen’s and CVS, it’s easy to get carried away. So I apply some discipline:

1. I have a cash envelope for my drug store money. When it’s gone, I’m done.
2. My limit is $20, including the purchase of extra Sunday papers.
3. If I decide to go higher than $20, it comes out of grocery money. So,
4. I hold off on the extra deals (above $20) until later in the week. Once I’ve bought groceries, I can use the leftover grocery money.

And another warning along with this if you look at other coupon sites: Many Coupon Professionals, when they describe how well they did, claim “free after rebate” as getting the items for free. I do not.

Regardless of the rebate, I still laid out the cash up front, which is no longer available for other purchases, albeit only for the time being. Yes, you get the money back and can use those dollars for things you DO need later on, so it isn’t a bad idea to do this—but I think it’s important to look at exactly how much cash is leaving your wallet at the time it goes. That’s also why I use cash. When using a debit card or credit card it just doesn’t feel like you’re spending money at all. Also, I've found that I'm more likely to "blow" the money if I do this. Remember, Walgreens puts their rebates on a gift card for an extra 10% back--the "non" sale items don't look too bad when it's all "funny money" on a gift card.

So the moral is this: when you’re looking at sites that tell you they got a lot of items for “free,” be aware that many times there WAS a cash outlay. It might have been cash from a previous rebate, but it might not. This is especially important if you’re just starting this coupon thing. You’ll need to decide how you want to approach it.

Now, on to the deals…

I’m going to deviate from the normal pattern of only doing Register Rewards/ECBs one day and sales the next. It just seems more efficient lately. If things start to increase in their variety/abundance, I might go back, but for now, I’ll combine my discussion.

Walgreen’s

The following three offers are in this week’s flyer. There are others, these are just the most advantageous.

Gillette Fusion Gamer, Venus Spa Breeze or Embrace Razor: $8.99, get $6 in Register Rewards
Clorox items (variety): 2/$6, get $2 in RRs
Excedrin 20 or 24 Ct., $1.99 get $1 in RRs

Deal 1: Gillette Razors

There’s a coupon for the Fusion ($4 off) and one for the Venus ($2 off). Using the biggest coupon:

Razor Price: $8.99
Coupon: -$4

Final Price: $4.99 get $6 in RRs.

You can then take the RRs and use them on another deal—Clorox, for example:

Deal 2: Clorox items (variety): 2/$6

Price: $6.00
-RRs: -$6

Final Price: FREE get $2 in RRs.

You can do each of these as many times as you want, but just remember, you need to go back and forth. This is what I mean. If you did the Fusion deal and got the $6, you could use it to buy another Fusion Razor, BUT you would NOT get another $6 in RRs.

However, you COULD use the RRs from the Clorox deal to get another razor and it becomes interesting if you have another coupon:

Deal 2a: Razor price: $8.99
Coupon from paper: -$4
RRs from Clorox: -$2

Final Price, $2.99 get $6 in RRs.

Another interesting RR deal:

Deal 3: Excedrin 20 or 24 Ct., $1.99 get $1 in RRs. There’s a Q for $1 off floating around out there that turns this into a $0.99 deal. However, consider this:

If you did the Clorox deal, you still have $2 in RRs. You could use this for the Excedrin, but it’s more than the price of the Excedrin ($1.99 it’s only the difference of a penny, but yes, it matters), so if that’s all you tried to do, the system wouldn’t allow it.

Here’s the answer: all the Valentine’s Day stuff is on clearance. Find a $0.25 item and add it to the purchase. The RR will then work. The deal would look like this:

Deal 3:
Excedrin Price: $1.99
Other item: $0.25 (or whatever you find)
Clorox RRs: $2

Final Price: $0.24 get $1 in RRs.

So, if you do deals 1-3, you will have purchased $17 dollars worth of stuff for $5.24 and have another $1 RR left over. Not bad.

Now for some sales items:

Flyer coupon: Reynolds Aluminum Wrap: $0.89 limit 2 per coupon. If you try to buy 4, you might have to break it up into 2 transactions even if you have 2 coupons.

There’s a coupon in the Sunday paper for $1.00 off aluminum foil EXCLUDING the 25 ft. size. Walgreens’ is a 20 ft. size, so the coupon will work!!! I’ve done this one in the past, so I can tell you it will. The only thing—you’ll need to have a total purchase greater than the value of the coupon here—just like I described in Deal 3 above. Since the sale is for $0.89 and the Q is a $1.00, you’ll have an overage with every roll.

Also, don’t forget, the Walgreen’s Easy Saver coupons CAN be combined with mfr coupons to get really good deals—especially since many of the coupons turn out to be sales items during the month.

CVS

CVS is pretty straightforward this week.

The first thing I want to mention is toothpaste. Colgate is on sale for $0.88 and there’s a coupon in THIS SUNDAY’S paper for $0.75. You’re talking $0.13 each! That’s perfect for charity!!!!

Here are the better Extra Bucks Deals:

Maybelline Lipstick: $8.99 get $5 ECBs limit 1 There’s $1 coupons out there for this.
Also get $5 ECBs with other Maybelline purchases limit 1

Revlon: Spend $20 get $10 ECBs limit 2 There’s $2 coupons out there for this.

Gillett Fusion Gamer or Venus Embrace: $7.99 get $4 ECBs limit 1 Don’t forget about the $4 coupon
Schick Intuition Plus: $8.99 get $4 ECBs limit 1

Clear Care or Zaditor Contact Lens solutions: $14.99 get $3 ECBs limit 1

Extreme Energy 6 hour drink: $4.99 get $4.99 in ECBs limit 1

Nyquil or Dayquil: 2/$9.98 get $5 ECBs limit 5 there’s a $1.50 coupon out there—use 2!!!

Just a Few Deals Here and There That You Might Want

Just thought I'd highlight a couple of items that might be of interest. These are all posted elsewhere on my blog, but these I think are particularly good.

Kroger (good all week):

Lay's Potato Chips: $1.99 ea
Lean Ground Beef: 7% fat: $3.29/lb

Both of these are about as cheap as they get anymore.

Publix (good through Wed):

Blistex Medicated: $0.88, but with $0.35 coupon, they are $0.18

Green Giant Valley Fresh Steamers: 50% off, plus $0.50 coupon makes them free! You actually make $0.11 on each of them, because the sale price is $0.89 (remember, the coupon is doubled).

Betty Crocker Cookie Mix: BOGO and a $0.50 coupon makes them Free! I bought some Peanut Butter and Sugar Cookie mix--my wife likes Peanut Butter and the Sugar Cookies are a great activity for the kids when they're bored. They make a mess, but at least they're occupied.

Hope these help!

The Publix Mystery Coupon, Walgreens And CVS Deals

First, the Publix Mystery Coupon:

Publix brand 2L soda bottles

Today when I was picking those up, a woman on the other side of the bin asked me if I had a coupon for it. I replied "you don't know who I am, do you?" and handed her my card (which is for this blog).

Anyway, here's a summary of how I did shopping:

Budget: $180
Actual: $134

Coupon Savings (which is a result of using The Grocery Game): $32
Sale Savings (as a result of using e-mealz, which gave me a menu based on the sales): $50.13

So, once again, those two web sites saved me big time money.

Walgreens: The only sale item I went for is the Ladies Bic Soleil disposable razors:

Price: $4.99

Walgreens Q: $1.00
Q from Paper; $2.00
Gift Card balance: $1.56

Final Price: $0.43

CVS: The only thing I bought was the toothpaste as I had discussed before. I intended on buying some Diet Coke, which had a ECB deal going, but in the end, I decided that to make it work, I'd need to buy 6 fridge packs and I didn't want to have that many in the house.

That's all until Wednesday, unless I twitter something in.

Have fun, save money and see you soon!

CVS Extra Care Deals, Walgreen's Register Rewards and Kroger-all beginning 2/15

Here's the Extra Care Deals and Register Reward Deals. Not much for Walgreen's but there are some sales I'll be posting tomorrow. In the meantime, take a look at what I found:

CVS

CVS has got a snowball worth rolling. First, here are the Extra Care deals of note. There are others, but these are the best ones.

Buy $20 Neutrogena Items, get $10 ECBs
Buy $15 of Vickery and Clarke, get $5 ECBs
Buy $20 Nexxus hair products, get $10 ECBs
Colgate Toothpaste: $2.99 get $2.99 in ECBs limit 2
Aussie or Herbal Essence Shampoo or Conditioner $2.99 get $1 ECB
Buy $20 in Diet Coke, Tylenol, or St. Joseph, get $10 ECBs

Now, I normally don’t cover anything but ECBs in the Saturday post, but this time, I’m mentioning a sale item: Powerade 32 oz. is 5/$5 and there’s a coupon for $0.50 off from the 1/4 Sunday paper.

Now, here’s a small snowball for those of you who are just getting started:

Colgate Toothpaste: $2.99 get $2.99 in ECBs limit 2
There’s a $1.00 coupon from the 2/1 Sunday Paper.

Step 1:

Colgate: $2.99
-Q from paper: -$1.00

Final price: $1.99, get $2.99 in ECBs

Step 2:

Colgate $2.99
-$2.99 ECBs from last deal

Final Price: FREE, get $2.99 in ECBs

In total, your cash out of pocket will be $1.99 and you’ll have 2 tubes of toothpaste.

What to do with that toothpaste you ask? Our church is going on a mission trip to Guatemala in March or April and they bring toothpaste when they go. Apparently, it's an appreciated commodity there. Stock up—you’ll find there are tons of opportunities to get toothpaste—then drop them off at the church! That is Marietta First United Methodist Church at 56 Whitlock Ave.

Now, here’s what you can do IF you have two copies of the coupon

Buy 2 tubes: 2 x $2.99 = $5.98
- Q from paper: 2 x $1 = $2.00

Final Price: $3.98, get $5.98 in ECBs.

At first this doesn’t sound like it makes sense because you need more cash. However, if you have other things you need to buy that aren’t that good of an Extra Care Deal, you’re actually better off doing this so that you use all your coupons. That’s how you ‘make’ money at this. Now, instead of only having $2.99 ECBs toward that purchase, you’ve got $5.98.

Here’s what I mean. There’s another ECB deal out there:

Excedrin: $8.99 get $3 in ECBs.

If you do it the first way, your Excedrin transaction looks like this:
Price: $8.99
-ECBs: -$2.99

Final Price: $6 get $3 ECBs and your total cash outlay is $7.99 (including the toothpaste).

Now, if instead, you used your two toothpaste coupons all at once, it’d look like this:

Excedrin Price: $8.99
-ECBs: -$5.98

Final Price: $3.01, Get $3 in ECBs and your total cash outlay is $6.99. You saved $1!!!

So, the moral of the story is: if you have a coupon on a deal like the toothpaste, you want to fiddle with your transactions to make sure you use as many as you can.

Here’s the bonus question: what if you had a coupon for the Excedrin as well???? (Hint-check out Excedrin.com or the Sunday paper from 1/4)

Walgreen’s

Walgreen’s has only a few Register Reward Deals and none of them are tremendous and really not worth planning for. The sales might have something, but I am going to wait until Sunday to post those.

Publix Deals to Jump On Right Away and How BOGO plus BOGO Really Works

I went to Publix today to get some deals I was afraid would be out of stock on Sunday, my normal shopping day. Also, I wanted to expound on something I covered at my seminar regarding using BOGO coupons with BOGO deals.

First, I had mentioned that if there is a BOGO (Buy One, Get One free) deal at the store and you have a BOGO coupon, you should get both items free. This is literally true at stores where you MUST buy 2 items to get the deal. However, you might find that you need one coupon for every item you're trying to acquire, which is what I ran into today at Publix. Technically, I shouldn't have had to do that, but I wasn't really interested in getting 12 boxes of Milk Bone dog biscuits, so I didn't push it. I had six boxes in the cart and 6 BOGO coupons, so I got them all for free.

That was one deal. The other deals to jump on are these:

Betty Crocker Frosting: $0.99 and a $1.00 coupon from the 2/8 Sunday paper makes them FREE!

Soft Scrub: BOGO, plus $0.50 coupon from 1/4 makes these $0.48 each!

Ken's Marinade: BOGO plus $1.00 coupon from 1/18 makes these $0.40 each!

And all of these deals are suggested charity items, so get as many as you can and be ready to give a bunch away!

I'll be posting CVS and Walgreen's tomorrow. I got a sneak peek at CVS and for those starting out, there is a good coupon snowball for beginners, so come back after 2 p.m. to see what you can do!

In the meantime, have fun, save money and stay tuned!

Publix Deals Beginning 2/11 or 2/12

As always, where Q is indicated, check CouponMom.com for the date/pub of the corresponding coupon. Suggested charity items are denoted with a *C*.

For those of you who attended my coupon seminar--remember I talked about BOGO + BOGO = 2 free items? Well, it appears we might have one this week. I've highlighted it in Bold Red.

There are a few more items that might be free after Q as well and those are highlighted in red. Be aware, though--I have not verified pricing to confirm this will work. Regardless, if they aren't free, they should be close to it.

For those of you who are new, my next "official" post will be Saturday, where I will take you through Walgreen's and CVS. If there's a good coupon snowball, I'll walk you through it step by step. I'll especially highlight anything that looks like it might be a good place to start, if you've never done it before.

One more thing--I put a Twitter feed in the upper right corner of this page. If you like, you can also get these feeds (called "tweets") by signing up for Twitter and following me. The feeds I post are deals that I run into or especially want to highlight, as well as reminders of when my posts will be done and anything else that appears relevant.

I'll admit, though, that these tweets sometimes sound like commercials. I'm working on that, but rest assured, I'm not advertising--it is only the deals that I spot when I'm out.

Shopping Roundup--I actually went to Rite Aid-- and the Publix Mystery Coupon for 2/8-2/9 is...

The Publix Mystery Coupon is Publix Brand 5 lb Sugar.

I went to CVS this morning and the only deal I did was on toothpaste (Colgate). No extra care deals. I did use a $3 off $15 purchase coupon, though--it was expiring today.

I actually went to Rite Aid today. Doritos and Rold Gold pretzels were 2/$5, which was about as good a deal as there was this week.

More on sales tonight or tomorrow.

Gotta go--I'm going to set up for my COUPON SEMINAR at 5 p.m. at Marietta First United Methodist Church (In case I haven't said it before).

Until then, have fun, save money and see you soon!

CVS Extra Care Deals Walgreens Register Rewards and Kroger Sale Specials beginning February 8

As I mentioned in a previous Twitter feed, CVS and Walgreen's are pretty light, but Kroger is having a big sale, so check the items they have against Coupons in CouponMom.com. Sorry, but I don't have a lot of time to do any coupon matching for you-I've got a lot going on this evening. Hopefully by Monday, I can expound on these a little more.

CVS

I'll cover only Extra Care Deals that jump out today and sales items tomorrow, if I have time around my Coupon Seminar. Honestly, though--I might be sitting this week out unless I've got ECBs that are going to expire.

American Greeting Cards: Buy 3, get $3 ECBs
Olay Pro X products Buy 1 product, get $5 ECBs--not a great deal even with coupons, but if you want this, you might consider it
$7 ECBs with Garnier purchase
$3 ECBs with Nivea purchase

Venus or Fusion Gamer Razor: $7.99 get $4 ECBs. This is a good deal with the $4 coupon that's been swirling around lately

Walgreen's

There's nothing in the Register Rewards Deals that interest me, so again, I might be sitting this week out.

Several Swiffer/Febreze items, Spend $20 get $5 RRs (eh, not so hot)

They also have the Fusion Gamer and Venus Razors, but they are $8.99 get $6 in RRs and another $4 with the purchase of 4 pack of cartridges. With the coupon i mentioned before, this is a better deal than at CVS.

Buy any 2 Tylenol product listed, get $3 in RRs. If you can find a coupon for these, it might be a good deal.

Publix Weekly Flyer Beginning 2/4 or 2/5

Publix is light on the BOGO (Buy One Get One) deals this week, but overall seem to have a bunch of things on sale. I'm hoping that's an anomaly, but here's what we've got. Charity items are denoted with a *C* and the coupons for the BOGO plus Q items can be found on CouponMom.com. Now, one note on that. When I say there's a Q, I mean there was a coupon in the Sunday paper at some point.

If you're buying something without that designation, you should check two additional places for coupons; namely, the manufacturer's web site and online coupon sources such as coupons.com, couponsuzy.com or similar. FYI--all the online coupon sites are the same engine, so just pick the one you like best. The only exception to that rule is the manufacturer specific sights, such as right@home or Dinner Made Easy. These sites have their own sets of rules.

Also note that some of the extended low price deals are ending in the next couple of days.

CVS Deals, Walgreen's deals and the Publix Mystery Coupon is...

First, as my Twitter feed shows, the Publix Mystery Coupon is Publix brand ground coffee, both regular and decaffeinated.

I just got back from my shopping, but my results are scattered because I bought some things a couple of days ago and didn't keep a running total. However, my estimate is that I spent about $130 and saved about $90 between e-mealz.com and The Grocery Game. Click on the icon on the right to get to e-mealz. Interestingly, I ran into someone else with an e-mealz grocery list, so the site must be catching on!!!

Next, here’s some great sales deals to consider. Where coupons are mentioned, check CouponMom.com for the dates and pubs.

CVS

First thing of particular note today: CVS is known for giving you $3 off $15 purchase coupons when you buy something with your Extra Care card. It used to be that if you bought $30 worth of items, you could use two of them. You could also include any coupons printed from their e-mails. This is no longer the case. You can only use one of these per transaction. From what Kristin (the cashier) told me today, that was always the intent, but the system finally caught up to what all the stores were doing. I can understand it both ways, but all this really means is that you want to break your transactions into increments of $15 or as close to it you can get.

There are only a couple of deals that pop out at me, but I do want to mention that there are several ECB deals listed in my last post and also, there are several I didn’t mention, simply because I wasn’t going to buy them. Here’s a quick list of those ECB deals:

KY Yours and Mine
Kotex
Hershey’s large candy bar

Here are some of the sales items that result in a final price of 65% off or more.

Electrasol Power Tabs are on sale $2.99. There’s a coupon that expires TODAY (2/1) for $2.50 off, making this $0.49 ea.

Hershey Valentine’s Day candy is $1.50 but with coupon its $0.50

And just so you can see what I bought today, here it is. I intended on picking up some CVS children’s aspirin, which was free after ECBs, but they were out of stock.

2 Revitalift cleanser: 2 x $5.99
2 Revitalift towelettes: 2 x $5.99

So, I made money!!! That's why I printed the results in green.

Walgreen’s

I didn’t do any shopping at Walgreen’s today, but I did get an Easy Saver catalog, which, as I mentioned in my last post, has a whole bunch of ‘free after rebate’ items in it, so I expect my Walgreen’s purchases will see a surge in the next couple of weeks.

Hershey’s Valentine’s Day candy is on sale here as well. Combine the flyer coupon and a mfr coupon from the paper, making this $0.89.

Some time this week, I’ll list the free after rebate items. I’ll try to do this by Wed., along with my review of coupon web sites, so check back soon!
